CAT is the acronym for Computer Assisted Translation. This software makes it possible to store a database of original texts in a language, aligned with their translations into the target language.
Together with a text processing program, this uses the existing translations from the database as a cue for new translations so that the system can create translation memories (TM) wich in turn can help maintain term and linguistic consistency in subsequent jobs from the same client. In the same way, translators can guarantee better coherence between texts and the process is less time consuming, which means greater efficiency and quality. All to your benefit.
These programs do not replace the translator; they do, however, propose an exact version when the text corresponds to a previous translation (in the same document or in previously processed documents) and therefore, provide real savings when managing vast multi-language documents that require regular updates. What is more, the programs do not change the source format, i.e., they allow translated texts to be assigned to the same publishing attributes as the source text, which means lower DTP times.
The characteristics of this system make it worth using whenever there is a need to have multilanguage documentation that uses a specific DTP standard and these standards need to be put in place while the original text is being set out and still in progress (e.g. InDesign®, FrameMaker®, MS-Word®, PageMaker®, QuarkXpress®). As a solution, it also makes it possible to split projects among several translators, guaranteeing consistent, specific and compliant terminology. Special IT tools allow us to create glossaries and dictionaries that use the terminology specific to the client company.
