Anyone who thinks that Portuguese is the only language spoken in Brazil is not entirely wrong… but they are not completely right either. <\/span>Yes, Portuguese is the country’s official language<\/b>. It is the language of television news, schools, public administration<\/span> and, of course, the famous greeting: Oi, tudo bem?<\/span><\/i>. But stopping there would be a little like saying <\/span>that feijoada<\/span><\/i> is simply a side dish made with beans.<\/span><\/p>\n

A bit reductive, wouldn’t you say?<\/span><\/p>\n

Brazil is enormous: it is the fifth-largest country in the world by area and the most populous nation in South America, with an estimated 212.6 million residents in 2024. It is also home to a fascinating, <\/span>varied and sometimes surprising linguistic mosaic <\/b>– one that spans 295 indigenous languages, regional varieties of German, a Japanese-Brazilian community of over two million, and a growing presence of English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

I admit that I may be slightly biased.<\/span> Although I have lived in Italy for decades and now feel very much at home in the Marche region, let me take you on a journey through the linguistic shades of my country of origin!<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Brazilian Portuguese: a language in its own right<\/span><\/h2>\n

Portuguese is the first language of the vast majority of Brazilians. But Brazilian Portuguese is not simply European Portuguese copied and pasted into the New World.. The relationship is somewhat comparable to that between British and American English. The underlying language is the same and mutual understanding is generally possible, but pronunciation, vocabulary, expressions and even certain grammatical structures can differ considerably \u2014 enough to matter in any professional translation or localization project. <\/span><\/p>\n

Brazilian Portuguese has developed an identity of its own. It is often perceived as more melodic, with open vowels and a particularly expressive rhythm. The differences go well beyond pronunciation. Everyday vocabulary, idioms, verb forms and patterns of address reflect centuries of contact with Indigenous languages, African languages and the languages brought by successive waves of migration. <\/span>A Brazilian may use words or constructions that sound unusual to someone from Portugal, and vice versa. <\/span><\/i>. Both varieties are Portuguese, but each expresses its own history, culture and way of seeing the world. For localization purposes, Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese should always be treated as separate target languages. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 1990, Portuguese-speaking countries signed the Portuguese Language<\/span> Orthographic Agreement<\/b> in Lisbon. Its purpose was to establish a more consistent spelling system across countries in which Portuguese is an official language. The agreement did not, however, erase the distinctive vocabulary, pronunciation or grammar of the different national varieties. <\/span><\/p>\n

European – and non-European – languages spoken in Brazil<\/span><\/h2>\n

Brazil’s linguistic diversity has also been shaped by immigration.. Several varieties of German – most notably Riograndenser Hunsr\u00fcckisch and East Pomeranian – are still spoken in communities in the south of the country, particularly in areas influenced by German-speaking migration during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. <\/span>In some towns, you might order a coffee in Portuguese and hear a reply in a regional German variety.<\/span><\/i>These are not museum relics: in certain communities they remain part of education, family life and local cultural identity, representing an ongoing coexistence between different linguistic worlds. <\/span><\/p>\n

English is also increasingly important. In a young country with strong international business connections, it is the most widely studied foreign language and a valuable skill in sectors such as technology, tourism, finance and global trade. <\/span>Spanish follows closely, for obvious geographic and commercial reasons. Brazil borders almost every Spanish-speaking country in South America – Chile and Ecuador being the exceptions even though Portuguese remains linguistically distinct from Spanish. <\/span> <\/p>\n

Another remarkable example is Japanese.S\u00e3o Paulo is home to the largest community of Japanese descendants outside Japan. Today, more than two million people of Japanese descent live in Brazil, and Japanese cultural and linguistic influences remain visible in food, festivals, education and everyday life. When sushi meets samba beautiful stories emerge, and sometimes new words as well.
<\/span><\/p>\n

At the roots of Brazil: 295 Indigenous languages<\/span><\/h3>\n

Before the arrival of the Portuguese, the territory that is now Brazil was an extraordinary linguistic landscape, with different peoples and communities speaking hundreds of distinct languages. Many languages were lost as a result of colonization, displacement and cultural suppression. Many others, however, have survived. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to Brazil’s 2022 Census, 295 Indigenous languages are currently spoken in the country. <\/span>Among those with the largest numbers of speakers are Tik\u00fana, Guarani Kaiow\u00e1 and Guajajara.. Other important Indigenous languages include Nheengatu, Kaingang and several varieties belonging to the Tupi, Macro-J\u00ea, Arawak and Carib language families.
<\/span><\/p>\n

The number of speakers of each language may be limited, but their cultural importance is immeasurable. Each language contains a unique way of describing nature, relationships, time, community and knowledge. They are not merely tools of communication. They are living repositories of identity and collective memory.
Cultural context, regional variation and local usage are therefore the foundations of effective localization.<\/p>\n
