Although American English originally developed from British English<\/strong>, over time it has evolved into its own language with unique characteristics. It\u2019s also worth remembering that spoken languages are like living organisms and can often evolve and depart significantly from the original language.<\/p>\n

As such, American English<\/strong> has developed some phonetic and grammatical differences<\/strong> from British English. While some of the differences are fairly insignificant and don\u2019t tend to hinder understanding (especially in written texts), others are fairly pronounced and could potentially prevent speakers from fully understanding one another.<\/p>\n

Phonetic differences between British and American English<\/h2>\n

Speakers of British English<\/strong> tend not to pronounce some letters at the end of words such as the letter R at the end of the words \u201cbutter\u201d and \u201cfaster\u201d, for example. While in American English<\/strong>, the letter T is often transformed into a D, especially when a double T features in the middle of a word, such as \u201cbutter\u201d, which is often pronounced \u201cbudder\u201d. British English<\/strong> on the other hand tends to pronounce the letter T with a harder sound, rendering it fairly distinct from the letter D.<\/p>\n

When the letter T comes at the end of a short word<\/strong>, speakers of American English tend not to pronounce it, combining it with the preceding N, as in the word \u201cinternational\u201d. Speakers of British English generally tend to pronounce the letter A as an A, while speakers of US English create a phonetic sound similar to the fusion of A and E (which non-native speakers perceive phonetically as an E). \u201cDance\u201d is often pronounced as \u201cdans\u201d in British English and \u201cdens\u201d in American English.<\/p>\n
