Layout (DTP)

Eurotrad provides a professional desktop publishing service for your business. Desktop publishing (DTP) ensures that your editorial pages maintain an appropriate design and structure in line with the original document when you decide to translate them into different languages.

DTP involves the application of a number of techniques designed to ensure your company’s editorial content (books, newspapers, magazines, brochures, posters, product packaging, billboards, etc.) translated into another language has a professional layout and proper formatting.

With the use of specific DTP software we can layout your company’s texts to deliver them back to you ready for professional printing or for putting the content online on your website or other devices.

What is desktop publishing (DTP)

Desktop publishing, often abbreviated as “DTP” or also called “digital typography,” brings together all the digital (i.e., computer-borne) procedures and techniques necessary for the production of publishing products.

The term literally means “personal publishing,” “desktop publishing,” and was invented by Paul Brainerd, who in 1985 published the first desktop publishing program (PageMaker), laying the foundation for the electronic publishing industry.
Since the 1990s, desktop publishing has led to an almost complete replacement of previous publishing production techniques.

The following devices are required to create content of a publishing nature with DTP: a computer, a monitor, a graphics card, a digital scanner, and a printer.
Today desktop publishing has become an integral part of the translation process. Through the use of digital typography software, we at Eurotrad can format and recreate the layout of foreign language pages for both print and digital use.

OUR CLIENTS

The success stories

We support companies and entities globally with our unique energy and professionalism in projects.

I got to meet Eurotrad after talking to a colleague of ours, we were in urgent need of translation services and he recommended us to turn to them. I was immediately impressed by the flexible and professional approach shown by the staff, combined with their attention to providing the best translation, choosing the most suitable style to satisfy our clients. I recommend Eurotrad for these reasons: excellent service, fast, accurate, at a competitive price.

Eurotrad has been a trusted supplier of Vitri Frigo since before I was hired. Their professionalism, short turnaround time for commissioned work, and very high level of post-layout customer service are their strengths. For these reasons, I recommend that everyone turn to our friends at Eurotrad.

We have been working with Eurotrad for a couple of years now, and we are very happy. We have worked with several agencies in the past, but since working with EuroTrad, our texts come back to us faster and with higher quality. Even short-term requests are handled quickly and to our utmost satisfaction. Eurotrad employees are reliable, fast and always extremely friendly. I can recommend EuroTrad (and have done so on several occasions)!

The Advantages of DTP for Businesses

When it comes to corporate communications, desktop publishing is a powerful weapon in a brand’s hands.

Desktop publishing is essential for designing editorial products related to businesses, such as product labels or catalogs that list all the products or services a company offers.

DTP is also important for companies with an international market. International brands need to translate editorial content related to their business (catalogs, commercial labels, billboards, etc.) into different languages.

Furthermore, they must ensure that their brand is always recognizable, appropriately using the colors and fonts that constitute the company’s Brand Identity.

Once the translation is completed, however, it is not uncommon for the length of the translated text to differ from that of the source text. In these cases, it will be necessary to graphically adapt the text and images through careful desktop publishing work so that the translated editorial product remains as effective as the original.

In these cases, it may be necessary, for example: to change the font size;

  • change the size of images;
  • replace the font chosen for captions;
  • rearrange elements (for example, on a commercial label) to make the final text more readable and impactful.

Precisely because we at Eurotrad understand the close relationship between translation and professional graphic design, we have also included a desktop publishing service. Our Graphic Editors work closely with our team of translators to always create an ideal final product, both linguistically and in terms of layout.

Examples of Desktop Publishing

Desktop publishing can be applied to any type of content where written text needs to be made accessible.

One of the most classic examples is the pages of a printed book, which must be composed so that the text is easily readable and that the titles are graphically distinct from the rest of the text, so that the reader can use them to navigate the page.

In the case of an illustrated book, the images should be inserted so as to intersperse the text or on pages entirely dedicated to them. It will also be necessary to place the caption for each image on the page so that it is easily readable and can be associated with the reference image.

Brochures, flyers, and billboards, commercial emails, and PowerPoint presentations are more effective from a communicative standpoint if desktop publishing is intelligently designed and adapted to the purpose of the page. Optimal page layout also helps keep the reader’s attention focused on all the elements that make up the page.

Origins of DTP

Desktop publishing (DTP) was born in the mid-1980s in the United States, when some newspapers equipped themselves with computer programs to lay out texts using a PC rather than complex and expensive graphics workstations.

The pioneer in the sector was Apple, which distributed one of the first widely available and easy-to-use desktop publishing programs. The program, called Pagemaker, was later also developed for Windows 1.0. From that moment on, anyone could buy a personal computer (Apple or Microsoft), a copy of the Pagemaker program, and start laying out their own texts.

Initially, these programs relied on a small number of different fonts, but over time, the range of fonts available to workers in the sector was expanded to the virtually infinite number of fonts we know and use today.

For the first ten years after the birth of desktop publishing, Apple held a virtually undisputed leadership in the industry. Only when Windows 95 hit the market was Microsoft able to compete with Apple: today the choice between an Apple system and a Microsoft system for desktop publishing depends only on the user’s preferences and no longer on the quality of the different layout programs.
